• Question: Hi Vera, Do you believe that the evolutionary pattern of predator-prey relationships will ever drive there to be another master phylum, after the age of mammals has passed? Are there any species or classes in particular that you think would take the place of mammals, in particular primates, if a disaster, like what is believed to have happened to the dinosaurs, was to occur. Thanks

I think you are right. It’s not only predator/prey problems – after all, humans for example aren’t really that great as a predator compared to a cheetah, which is actually not well suited for survival. Evolution works as a general fight for space and resources and there is always a group of organisms that does better than the rest. It used to be dinosaurs for a while, and at some times in some places it was huge birds. If we go, what might it be next? I suspect among vertebrate animals (so not insects or so) the next big non-mammalian thing might be birds – but who knows!
