I think this is when something goes from straight from solid to gas. This is unusual as usually substances go through the liquid phase in between. Dry ice is an example, like in 80s pop videos.
It depends on the pressure you are looking at. At low pressures, a lot of things will go straight from solid to gas, but for pressures like atmospheric pressure most things, as Ed said, go via a liquid phase. It also depends how strong the bonds between different molecules are.
