I was inspired to become a scientist and study animal behaviour when I read a book called The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. I recommend it to all my students and I would recommend it to everyone who is getting towards the end of school and is interested science

No idea. I always just wanted to be a scientist and I always loved animals so it was pretty clear from very early onwards that I was going to be an animal biologist.

I always liked animals when I was young – my Mum and Dad used to take me to London Zoo, which I loved. Then after I finished my maths degree I was excited to realise I could study evolution!

I had a really good chemistry teacher at school who was extremely enthusiastic and he knew everything! This got me interested in chemistry so I decided to do a degree in it.

After that I wanted to carry on studying and found the project I am working on now. I have always been interested in space, and the thought of carrying on chemistry and being able to look a “spacey” things was very exciting!

There are a number of things. One of them was just looking up at the sky on a dark night and seeing so many stars out there and wondering how they could have formed, and thinking about how massive the Universe truly is.
